Character Information
Name: Yoosung Kim
Canon: Mystic Messenger
Canon Point: Common Route Day 4, before midnight.
Age: 21 (Korean), 20 (International)
History: wiki! It is worth checking out the endings page as well since Yoosung's main page only covers the events of his good ending.

Personality:

Yoosung Kim is basically the quintessential slacker college student - he's happy-go-lucky on the outside, depressed on the inside, and never sleeps because he's addicted to video games despite having a heavy workload for his classes. As he is one of the love interests in the game, he fills the role of the adorkable youngest member of the charity organization the characters belong to. He is typically the most naive and emotional, as well as the most down-to-earth and relatable compared to the other male love interests who are a corporate heir, a rising star musical actor, and a secret agent. He can switch back and forth between being the butt of jokes about his inexperience and being the straight man lampshading the others' over the top lifestyles. It's also common for Yoosung to be tricked by his best friend 707's pranks and mischief, although Yoosung claims he's merely particularly gullible when it comes to 707 because of how much he trusts him and respects him for being an actual genius.

When it comes to others outside the organization as well as the Main Character (MC), Yoosung is very friendly and empathetic. From the beginning of the game, he does his best to make MC feel welcome, including asking how she feels out of concern when the other RFA members treat her with suspicion at first. It's also established that Yoosung has a ton of random acquaintances, both on and off line, that he may have shallow relationships with but still remember well enough to give anecdotes about off the cuff. You could definitely say he's a 'people person.'

Sometimes this can be to a fault, as he only really seems to find motivation when it is for another person, and he often longs to have someone else make decisions for him. His desire for the approval of others is said to be his fatal flaw. He can indeed be quite insecure about this, leading him to all kinds of attention-seeking behavior and sometimes deeply jealous tendencies. Yoosung tells MC a lot of embarrassing things about himself in a way that seems like it is just to make her pity and pay more attention to him - and this runs a full gamut, anywhere between "I accidentally wore mismatched socks today silly me" to "my fetish is being insulted while dressed as a maid" (he tells her this WHILE HE'S IN LINE AT A GROCERY STORE!) He also feels weird and unhappy when she's having a good time with the other men in the RFA, and wants her to only give her words and attention to him, calling it jealousy outright. Seven calls him a yandere at one point, though he's never shown harming anyone so it's basically a joke. Still, he can be pretty intense.

If there is one social arena he considers himself completely inept in, it's romance. Yoosung is initially single and very loudly displeased about it, referring to himself dramatically as a 'forever-alone' while crying about how he wants to have a girlfriend. It is possible that he's angling for pity dates as of course he talks about this in front of MC, and in fact he later admits in the past there were some girls who asked him out that he turned down because he wasn't interested. It is possible that he simply didn't know them very well at the time, as Yoosung idealizes the concept of a slow-burn romance with a close friend. Hilariously, as he is a character from a game where the characters fall in love over the course of 11 both IRL and IC days. In practice, when Yoosung finds someone he loves he attaches to them at lightning speed and is willing to devote himself entirely to them, or even die for his object of affections as evidenced by his reckless actions in many bad endings.

This is as good a time as any to give context to Yoosung's depression. In all routes, he is grieving his cherished "cousin-sister" and mentor, Rika. She supposedly committed suicide just before his high school graduation, which left him gutted and rendered him completely aimless. While before he was rather prim and excessively diligent and qualifying for his scholarship to a top university, he became a much 'looser' person in order to cope with his loss. Gaining an addiction to a League of Legends spoof called "LOLOL" (League of Loneliness of Life), it became a huge crutch for him. Yoosung mentions at one point that it's incredibly painful for him to go on living every day, and that most of his cheerfulness is pretense at this point.

Although, it is worth noting that the facade is more of a coping mechanism than an actual mask. Yoosung typically wears his heart on his sleeve anyway - whether it is his affection for MC or something more negative, he is not hesitant to put it on the table. He'll gush or vent as he needs to get his emotions out, and really, he hates secrets. But there's only one thing worse than secrets: V's secrets (but if he is in that Office meme and someone just says "V" after pulling away the piece of paper, he would be like, you know what you're right.)

See, the circumstances of Rika's death were extremely mysterious and suspicious, and as her body was never found, they were basically relying solely on the testimony of her fiancee, V. Yoosung suspects V of lying and covering up her death. As well, the other members trust and refuse to doubt V, which creates a feeling of isolation from the rest of the RFA and Yoosung. He is always frustrated and hates V for his lack of transparency in either emotion or information, and on the other hand is stubborn to defend Rika's memory. This goes double in any route where he learns the truth that V really was lying to everyone and furthermore Rika was engaging in criminal acts as the leader of a cult. Yoosung is quick to take Rika's side and insist that V must really be the one at fault.

The main takeaway you can get from these depression modes is Yoosung has a very difficult time letting anything go, whether that's loyalty, grief or a grudge. It also shows that he is in fact wiser and more observant than he normally acts, since he was the only one to see through the lies from the beginning - although the surprising intelligence also ties back to him being a book-smart and organized student council president prior to everything that brought him so much trauma. A lot of this is because Yoosung has a strong sense of goodness and justice that he can get really fired up about. You see it in a smaller scale where Yoosung is passionate about sticking it to trolls and assisting newbies in LOLOL, but he also just gets really angry seeing anyone being treated badly and will do whatever he can to help. A lot of this is actually due to things Rika taught him - where he used to be more disillusioned and apathetic when they first met, she helped him find a passion for volunteering and bringing happiness to others.

While Yoosung is obviously incredibly prone to escapism whether it is via gaming or his thirst for femdom, he can be reliable when the chips are down and with his feelings motivating him. At the end of his route he is brave enough to tackle a cultist holding the detonator to a bomb and survive an attack that blinds him in one eye - he also matures enough to finish his studies and become a distinguished vet. This is him at the height of his potential where he becomes a little more like the diligent person he was before Rika died.

Of course as he is from a multi-route game there are multiple other possibilities as well. Several of these endings reveal an occasional tendency for him to have episodes in which he suffers from delusions, such as the one where he insists everyone is actually a robot, formerly a human that's been brainwashed by Seven and V to fill a role in the game. In another one, he sincerely believes the MC is the reincarnation of Rika and rushes to her side to 'protect her', though his action gets them both killed by a bomb. In another one, rather than tackling the cultist he allows him to kidnap him as some kind of torture slave, while convincing himself it's the best thing he's ever done because he's keeping him at bay from the woman he loves. Yoosung Kim contains multitudes, and ultimately it's reactions that decide whether he's going to blossom or careen off the deep end.

Abilities & Skills: He's good enough at a video game to be second place in a ranked multiplayer online league and he can kind of cook good. He also has a small amount of college veterinary know how (that does not necessarily translate to being good with animals before he actually becomes a vet.) That's about it, the boy's a normie.... oh, but Mystic Messenger as a whole can be meta sometimes (as in having rare moments of clarity where the characters make nods toward being in a video game and such) so if that counts as an ability I'll claim that as a potential one since Yoosung kinda goes full undertale in the ending where he thinks they're robots

Inventory/Companions:
lifted directly from a canon supplemental material, Yoosung has a bag that contains:
1) Cell Phone (I don't really use them for communication, other than with the rest of the RFA...)
2) Student ID (I actually got a new one. I lost the first one.)
3) Plaid Wallet (I'm running low on finances T_T What part-time job should I get...?)
4) Pink Bunny Pencil Case (I carry it with me because there's this cute character printed on it.)
5) Class Printouts & Notebook that matches the pencil case (What elective should I choose...?)

Choice: Roulette - Fae, Chimera or Faun
Reason:
First of all Yoosung is already struggling with regular school, let alone magic school, so I think he'd fail too much as a witch. Second, the ferality of monsters will potentially let me play with his darker traits, and Yoosung makes too many animal metaphors for me to ignore it

Fae is because he's a cutesy twink whose plot role is he sees through lies!!! Also he gets drunk kind of often in canon so this is more honest to his character than alcohol-tolerant fauns. If he gets this I want to make him a glowing insect to fit his name which means falling star. I would probably base it off a glowworm beetle because their antennae are glorious

Faun is because of this canon image (although I also asked about korean musk deer's vampire fangs ages ago and got a greenlight so this will be a tossup) - it also fits him because he's horny and can be jumpy. I would probably mess with his head to make him more promiscuous.

Chimera is kind of the "unfitting" choice, but I would make him a wolf/sheep chimera because again that image but also Yoosung wished he could be MC's dog once and well... well. I don't want to be nice to him and make him a cute puppy turnskin. In any case, if he gets rolled as this I am planning to use the social disadvantages to send him down a dark path.
